Premiers from two Maritime provinces will meet with the Governor of Massachusetts to “stress the importance of the relationship between New Brunswick and the United States,” said a Saturday news release.
New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt and Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz will meet with Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts at her office in Boston Saturday.
Holt said New Brunswick needs to maintain a strong relationship with its neighbours.
“Tariffs could have a huge impact on our jobs, economy, revenues and our ability to deliver services to New Brunswickers,” said Holt. “New Brunswick is the most dependent on the Unites States, out of all the provinces; 92 per cent of our exports go to the U.S.”
Holt is in Boston to reinforce and diversify New Brunswick’s seafood industry at the Seafood Expo of North America. She said her aim was to strengthen the province’s economy.
“We need to tell American leaders like Governor Healey that new tariffs will make Canadian products, such as jet fuel for Boston’s Logan Airport, more expensive to the U.S customers,” Holt said.
